Former Florida edge rusher George Gumbs Jr. entered this year’s NFL Combine as an unexpected invite, but he delivered a performance that likely caught the attention of teams selecting in the later rounds of April’s draft.

Gumbs earned a 6.14 grade, placing 20th at his position. His physical measurements were particularly notable. He recorded a 41-inch vertical leap, the second-highest ever among defensive ends and edge defenders, just half an inch short of the 2023 record set by Nolan Smith.

His 4.66-second 40-yard dash was solid, though not extraordinary. In the 3-cone drill, he stood out as one of only two edge defenders to participate, posting a 7.00-second time that highlighted his quick burst and agility.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Gumbs received a production score of 58, ranking 32nd among defensive ends and edge defenders. However, his athleticism score of 75 placed him eighth at the position. His combined total score of 63 ranked 26th overall.

Originally projected as an undrafted free agent, Gumbs may have improved his draft outlook enough to be considered for a Day 3 selection. He possesses significant upside and remains a coachable prospect off the edge. Notably, Gumbs began his collegiate career as a walk-on wide receiver at Northern Illinois, indicating there is still room for growth as he continues developing toward his full potential.
