After going winless and finishing last in Season 1, Boston Common Golf is postseason-bound in Season 2.
The Ballfrogs punched their playoff ticket with a 9-2 triumph over New York Golf Club in the second contest of Tuesday’s doubleheader at SoFi Center, moving to 3-1-0 on the year.
It was a rough evening for New York, which had already fallen to The Bay in the opener in a match decided on the final hole. NYGC now sits at 1-3 but remains mathematically alive in the playoff race after reaching the Finals in Season 1.
Key moments
GREAT SCOTT: Making his first TGL appearance of the season, Adam Scott delivered a standout performance to propel the Ballfrogs into the postseason. After missing a 4-foot par attempt on the opening hole, he was nearly flawless the rest of the night. His approaches at Nos. 6 and 7 set up birdies, and he drained an 11-foot birdie putt at No. 8. That sparked a five-hole winning streak for Boston, capped by Scott’s Singles victory over Cameron Young at No. 10 to extend the lead to 6-2. He later birdied No. 13 to collect two more points and seal one of the most impressive individual showings in SoFi Center history.
KEEP IT CLEAN: Keegan Bradley debuted a new look Tuesday, shaving off the mustache he had sported at SoFi Center — including during Monday’s loss to Atlanta. The timing was intentional: Bradley had planned to keep the mustache until Boston suffered its first defeat of the season. After contributing strongly to the Ballfrogs’ third win, he may need to shelve the razor once again.
STAR GAZING: Tuesday’s match drew several notable guests to SoFi Center, including New York Mets star Juan Soto, former New York Giants quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning, and WWE superstar The Miz.
Manning joined the broadcast and traded playful barbs with Bradley, a devoted New England Patriots fan. The Miz took some swings inside the arena before the match but came away humbled.
“Sometimes I feel like I can go pro, and then I get a reality check when I hit a ball into that screen,” The Miz said. “It is the most difficult green I’ve ever done in my life.”
Triples
Boston closed Triples in dominant fashion, winning four straight holes to grab a 5-2 advantage after trailing twice in the opening five.
With the score even at 2-2, Scott nearly recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 seventh, “Cenote,” leaving his tee shot three feet from the cup. Hideki Matsuyama converted the birdie putt to give Boston its first lead at 3-2.
Scott stayed sharp with an 11-foot birdie at No. 8, and a New York bogey on its Team Hole, “Big Apple,” extended the margin to 5-2. It marked the first time this season NYGC failed to earn a point on “Big Apple.”
Both Scott and Matsuyama were making their season debuts and needed a brief adjustment period on the greens. Scott’s missed 4-foot par putt on the first allowed New York to take an early 1-0 lead.
Boston evened the match at the second when NYGC declined a Hammer throw. New York regained momentum at the fifth, using the Hammer after Xander Schauffele stuck his tee shot within seven feet at “Craic On.” Boston declined, falling behind 2-1 through five holes.
The Ballfrogs responded with a birdie at the sixth to tie things at 2-2 before taking control late in Triples.
Singles
Boston carried its momentum into Singles, with Scott birdieing No. 10 to claim another point and extend the winning streak to five holes, pushing the lead to 6-2 with five remaining.
New York managed halves at Nos. 11 and 12 to stay in contention, but Scott’s birdie at No. 13 — with the Hammer in play — stretched the advantage to 8-2 and officially clinched the match for Boston.
